Is this a trick??
No! this isnt a trick! This is a simple idea, whereby you take the image coming from your tv, and project it on your wall. If I wanted to trick you I wouldnt show you who it worked first, would I?

How does this work?
I works by taking the light from your tv, and bending the light in a magnifying glass, and then projecting it onto your screen or wall.
See the picture below.

All this is, is a camera obscura, and that idea has been around for years!

Why doesnt everyone have one of these?
I doesnt have a clue! There are easy and cheap to make, and the end result is well worth 5pounds and 30mins messing around with cardboard!

Can I use a normal magnifying glass?

Yep, you can try, in fact I think its worth any thinking about making one of these, try a norm magnifying glass first. But the picture you get will be nothing like the quality that you can get from a fresnel lens. Why? Because a fresnel lens is nearly flat, and therefore you get little distortion, the bend of the magnifying glass lens will be heavily increased by the time your image hits the wall. But it is worth trying out with one if your unsure if this system will work

Where can I find out more about the fresnel lens?

What can I use for a screen?

Anything you like! If youve got a white wall in your house then that should be ok. But you will get a vastly supieriour image using a screen. A screen will improve the image by about 6 times. If you dont have a screen, you can make one, make a wooden frame, then strech a white sheet over it. Try painting it with glossy with paint, or silver paint so it reflects back as much light as possible.

Why does the box have to be black?

The box must be black on the inside to stop to much light getting thru, all you want is the image of the tv screen on your wall, not blurred white light. Painting the box matt black (try blackboard paint, or better still line the box with matt black paper, or even black felt) will improve your picture no end. My first box I painted the inside with satin black car spray paint, I got a good image, but the reflective nature of the paint means the image could be improved.

Where can I see a picture of the projected image?

HERE!

sorry about the quality, but i got a bit carried away with the compression when i was making jpegs, and have now lost the original!

How much will this cost me to make?

Well the fresnel lens will be 5pounds, and all the other bits and bobs should be lying round you house! Id say 7quid tops, thats for black paint and tape. (and a fresnel lens)

What do I need to make this?

Every thing you need to make this is listed here

What can I do to improve the image?

1. Turn out all your lights! Thats the most important thing, the darker your room the better the image, (just like a cinema!)
2. Get a screen to project on.
3. Use a Fresnel lens
4. Use matt black paint.
5. Spend time focusing your projector!
6. Turn the brightness and contrast up on you tv.
7. Make sure only light gets out from the projector lens, and that none escapes out of the side of the projector, as this will elluminate the room and affect the picture!

Why arent these available ready made?

I havent a clue! If you cant be bothered to make your own, why not send me your tvs dimentions and I see if I have the time to knock you one up.

Why does the box have to be 45cm long?

Thats just a catch all for other types of fresnel lenses. If youre using one of mine, then 38cm should be enough
(to find out the best length of box for you TV / lens combination, turn out all your lights, and turn the tv on, then move the lens back and forth infrount of the tv, until you get a good image. Measure this, and then add a coulpe of inches, then that how long your box should be.

What shall I use to paint it?

I surrgest blackboard paint, or better still felt! Anything matt black will do the job well, you could line it with black paper. what ever you have will do, but the shinier the paint the more blurry the image. try water colour or poster paint as they are ofter matt.

Why dont you sell the information?
Like people do on yahoo/ebay? Cos its simple stuff, and Id rather people coulds see how this works before they send any money for a fresnel lens. Its simple stuff.

Will 2 magnifying glasses make the picture the right way up?
